VGT -
GUILDFORD OPEN
After
course record tying 63’s on day one,
Seymour Creek’s Bryn Parry and
Victoria based Canadian Tour Pro
Stuart Anderson battled back and
forth on Sunday to decide the 2009
Guildford Open Champion in classic
style.
After round one on this newly
resurrected event, there were a
total of a dozen Professionals who
carded 68 (-4) or better. Round two
was a birdie shoot-out for those
within a handful of shots of the
lead, but none were up to the
challenge of Anderson and Parry on
this day.

MAYFAIR LAKES CLASSIC
In
a field of 68 Amateurs including 37
players in the Championship Flight
(5.0 factor and under), Richmond’s
Gordon Swenson prevailed in
tough scoring conditions to win the
2009 VGT Mayfair Lakes Classic with
a score of 70 (-1). Swenson’s round
consisted of 7 birdies on the day
including a final birdie at the 18th
– good for a four shot victory over
Mayfair Lakes regular Michael Son
and McCleery’s John Othitis. This
was Swenson’s first VGT event
of the year and he plans to play
quite a few more events this year.
“It was great to get back to the
tournament scene” stated Swenson
after the round. “It’s been a while
since I’ve been in that situation
and it was great to finish off the
way I did to capture the win”.

VGT
SPRING CHAMPIONSHIP
In
a star-studded field of 45
Professionals, including 26 past or
present Canadian
Tour players. Hazelmere’s own Teaching Professional
Phil Jonas showed them all how it’s
done, shooting 68 (-4) on a challenging
Hazelmere layout for a one shot victory
over Guilford Head Professional Dan
Swanson. Jonas’ lone bogey on the day
came on the long par 3 – 7th
hole, where he failed to get
up-and-down for what would be his
fault on the card. When
interviewed after the round, Jonas
owned up that it wasn’t the
prettiest of rounds, but as he is so
well known for, he made the very
most of his good play and ‘worked
his way around the golf course’ like
he knows how to better than most
anyone in the game, certainly here
in Vancouver. Jonas took home
$1,500 for his victory and vaulted
himself some $1,300 ahead of past
Nationwide Tour Player Bryn Parry.

VGT SWAN-E-SET CLASSIC
On
an uncharacteristically hot and
humid day in May, it was
Surrey
golfer Derek Wray who led the
field of 64 amateur golfers with a
score of 75 (+3) on the way to his
second amateur victory of the year
on the Vancouver Golf Tour
schedule. Wray persevered on
extremely difficult scoring
conditions as the hot weather over
the last two days made the smooth
Swan-e-set putting surfaces firm and
fast and unreceptive to anything
more than a sand wedge. “The golf
course was in perfect condition”
stated Wray. “The greens were
running with perfect pace and
incredibly smooth. The challenge to
the day was certainly getting the
ball close to the hole with the
greens getting firmer and firmer as
the day went on.

GREEN ROOM OPEN
I
guess he can thank his coach Phil
Jonas for the both the
pre-tournament work
and invite to play, as 19-year old
Dong Su of Surrey claimed his
maiden Professional Victory
yesterday, shooting 66 (-6) at the
2009 GREEN ROOM OPEN at Squamish
Valley Golf & CC. Su scorched the
front nine in 31 (-5) and made eight
birdies total on the day to edge out
Canadian Tour member John Shin by
one shot to win $1,100. Shin played
very steady with 5 birdies on his
card and no bogeys to shoot 67 and
win $800.

POINT ROBERTS CLASSIC
Hammering
his way through the front nine at
five under par (-5) in swirling
winds, Seymour Creek’s Dave
Zibrik cooled off somewhat on
the back nine, but managed to stay
ahead of his peers and win his first
VGT event of 2009 shooting 2-under
par 70. Zibrik outlasted all 93
competitors on the very challenging
yet immaculately conditioned Point
Roberts layout to win $1,400.

NORTHVIEW RIDGE CLASSIC
At
VGT’s Inaugural Amateur Series event
at Northview’s Ridge course this
Sunday, it was Maple Ridge’s
James Oliver who withstood the
rigors of “Championship Sunday Pins”
to outlast 81 Amateur competitors on
this day. Oliver’s round consisted
of five birdies enroute to an even
par 72 and a one shot victory over
his next competitors Chris Kobler of
Royalwood Golf Club and Coquitlam’s
Matthew Rohatensky. Some great
birdies on 16 and 18 by Oliver and
late bogeys by Kobler on 18 and
Rohatensky on 17 kept this event
from going into a sudden death
playoff. For his victory, Oliver won
$200 in Perfect Lies Gift
Certificates and a Galvin Green
Windstopper pullover.

NICKEL HEATING OPEN
After
a sluggish start to 2009 due to
family and teaching commitments,
Seymour Creek’s Bryn Parry
was in fine form this Monday
shooting 66 and winning VGT’s fourth
event at Ledgeview – the 2009 NICKEL
HEATING OPEN. Parry out-lasted 99
other golfers in Ironman like
scoring conditions, and finished in
style with a birdie-birdie finish to
top Shaughnessy’s Brandan Price by
one shot. Parry’s victory earned him
$1,400 and more importantly vaulted
him back into contention on the
CLEVELAND GOLF / SRIXON CANADA Order
of Merit, now only $300 short of
Phil Jonas who leads with $2,408.66.

SANDPIPER CLASSIC
Canadian
Tour Rookie James Allenby of
Chilliwack battled rain, wind and
hail at Sandpiper Golf Resort this
Monday to claim his maiden
Professional victory in VGT’s 3rd
VGT Tour stop in ’09. Allenby posted
7 birdies and an eagle on his card
en route to shooting 64 (-8) and a
four shot victory over fellow
Canadian Tour Pro John Shin and
University Golf Club Professional
Sergej Dronov. Allenby’s victory
earned him $1,000, but more
importantly the required tune-up he
was looking for in preparation for
his first Canadian Tour event in
Mexico next week. “It’s been great
to have VGT here to play the past
few weeks to provide me with some
great early tournament experience
for my Can Tour schedule”.

2009 BRAD GARSIDE
OPEN
“Halpen is
happening in his first VGT Win”
It
seems like the Canadian Tour’s
Todd Halpen made the right move
to come out to the west coast in
preparation of his ’09 Canadian Tour
season. In blistering winds up to 60
km/hr at Boundary Bay’s King’s Links
by the Sea, Calgary’s Todd Halpen
stayed patient, carding two birdies
and an eagle for a well-earned round
of 71(-1). Halpen’s fine play earned
him the 2009 Brad Garside Open
Championship and $1,300 for his
victory over the other 82 golfers in
the field. Halpen plans to play in a
few additional VGT Spring events
before the Can Tour schedule
commences on April 20th in Mexico.
Halpen needed an eagle on hole #14
to hold onto a one shot victory over
local
Kings Links Teaching
Professional Dave Bolton who birdied
14 & 15 to shoot even par 72 and a
second place cheque of $900. 2008
Champion John Shin and former
Champion Tour player Norm Jarvis
fell two shots short with scores of
73 (+1).
