Young Guns battle it out to show
they can play with the Pros!
Our Second VGT Spring
Series Event was successfully contested over fair skies and perfect
spring-like conditions at the Squamish Valley Golf Club today. With 25
professionals and 13 elite amateurs and juniors registered, VGT crowned
Canadian Tour Professional Lindsay Bernakevitch as its second winner in
their 15 tournament schedule. As fate would have it, Bernakevitch was a
default entrant into the event as the US Pro Tour Event was cancelled
due to funding problems. This didn’t stop him from coming home a few
days early and shooting a winning score of 67. His five under total was
only one shot clear of Fraserview Professional Dan Swanson and amateur
Brandan Price of Vancouver. Seems like VGT’s mission statement is
holding true, as two of the top four golfers in the field were young
amateur golfers, who clearly showed they can play up against our top BC
Professionals. Not bad considering 16 out of the 38 golfers registered
shot even par or better on the day!

VGT’s next two event
get underway this weekend at the BC Match
Play Team Championship Qualifying and Monday, April 9th at Furry
Creek. The BC Match Play Qualifier is being staged at Meadow Gardens
this Saturday and McCleery Golf Course and Ledgeview Golf Club on
Sunday. The top 32 teams will qualify to play in the Match Play Draw
which gets underway Sunday, April 8th at Royalwood Golf Course.
After the first two VGT
events, Professional Matt Palsenbarg leads the Order of Merit Title with
700 points, a mere 5 points ahead of former Canadian Tour Professional
Phil Jonas. The year-ending Order of Merit Winner will earn a paid entry
down to PGA Tour Qualifying School in the fall.
Elite amateurs with
handicaps of 0-10 are welcome to join membership in VGT and corporate
golfers with BCGA handicaps of 0-36 can come out and play a series of
Corporate ‘Pro-am’ Team Events throughout the year.
