Yonemoto’s Birdie
Barrage earns him victory at Squamish Valley!
Waiting patiently after recording 8 birdies on
the day and shooting 67 at this week’s VGT
Spring Series Event at Squamish Valley, Kendal
Yonemoto thought he was going to be forced into
his second playoff in two VGT Events this year.
With Matt Palsenbarg already in at -4, it looked
like Guilford Golf Club Head Pro Dan Swanson was
going to make Yonemoto work for his victory.
Standing in the par 5 - 17th fairway, Swanson
sat at -4 himself, not knowing where the field
was that day. Being the last group in the field,
Swanson’s finish decided the fate of Yonemoto –
to win or to head into another playoff. After
finding out the news of Swanson’s position on
#17, Commissioner Mulholland raced back to the
clubhouse to inform Yonemoto of a possible
playoff. However, after a bogie on 18 from
Swanson, Yonemoto claimed Low Professional
honors, as well as an $800 winners cheque. With
his win, Yonemoto works his way to the top of
the VGT Order of Merit with a total of $1,650
after two events – some $300 clear of John Shin,
who shot an even par 72 on the day.
Yonemoto’s round of 67 was very impressive,
considering the challenging conditions of the
round – a swirling 1-2 club wind all day and
temperatures that fell to 3 degrees (and
snowing). Swanson’s back-to-back 3rd Place
finishes in VGT’s opening events leaves him in
3rd place overall in this year’s Order of Merit.
Nationwide Tour Player Bryn Parry shot a
respectable score of 70 (-2), good for 4th place
and moved him into 4th overall in the Order of
Merit Standings.
In the Amateur Division, our newest VGT
Member, Mike Mannion led the field with his
round of 74 (+2), collecting $200 in Perfect
Lies Gift Certificates. Our Low Amateur in the
6-10 division was Masa Takahashi, shooting a
round of 76 and also collecting $200 in Perfect
Lies Gift Certificates.
