Final Round in Review:

Bogdan plays ‘PERFECT-LY’ at Sandpiper

After a course record round of 64 (-8) on Friday’s opening round of the 2008 PERFECT LIES VANCOUVER OPEN, 20 year old Lucas Bogdan maintained his 4 stroke lead on day 2 with a 2-over par 74 heading into the final round today. A shaky bogey start on hole #1 did not deter the Northwood University sophomore as he bounced right back on the 2nd hole with a birdie 3. The biggest question on a lot of people’s minds was how the young Ledgeview amateur would handle the pressures of playing in the final group of such a major 54-hole Championship. And after his second bogey of the day on the 6th hole, it seemed like the 20 year old NAIA 3rd Team All American star was having a bit of a tough time handling the final group/ final round situation.

Meanwhile, three groups ahead, Nationwide Tour member Bryn Parry was on a bit of a charge. At +1 at the start of the day and 7 shots back, Parry seemed like less of a threat to Bogdan than one would have thought. However, at the turn, Parry had made a small move, getting himself to 2-under for the day and 1-under for tournament. A back nine charge of three birdies in four holes pushed Parry to 4-under for the tournament and only 2 shots out of the lead.

At the same time, Bogdan made the turn at 1-over par, and 5-under for the tournament while two groups behind Bogdan, another charge was being laid down by rookie Professional Iljin Chun. Birdies on holes 1, 3, 5 and a hole-in-one on #7 vaulted Chun to -6 for the tournament, taking the outright lead after 9 holes.

With 9-holes to play, Bogdan was at -5 for the tournament, trailing Chun by one shot and had Parry chasing up ahead on #13 at -4. Chun’s lead was short lived, however as he doubled the 11th hole to go back to -4 while up ahead Parry kept his birdie barrage going with two more birdies on #15 and #16, moving him to -6 for the tournament. With both Chun and Parry making their charges ahead, Bogdan seemed unfazed by the Live Leaderboard being waved in front of him and played the back nine like a true veteran. Carding birdies on holes 10, 13 and 15, Bogdan moved his way back to -8 for the Championship, re-claiming the lead on Parry by two shots. With Chun making another bogey on 15 to go back to -3, it looked like it was a two man race coming down the final few holes.

With the wind howling into the players’ faces on #17, Parry hit two near perfect shots to get himself up to within 25 feet of the stick, ready to try for what would have been his 6th birdie in 7 holes. Leaving his first putt 4 feet short, however and lipping out on his next put Parry back to -6 for the day and -5 for the tournament. Needing a birdie on 18 to have any chance at putting the pressure on Bogdan coming in, Parry took dead aim at the tucked pin on #18. His iron shot honed in on the flag and was one step from being perfect. However, Parry’s ball rebounded off the top of the greenside bank and rolled back into the pond. Parry’s pitch from beside the green narrowly missed for his par and he tapped in for a closing round of 67, 4-under for the Championship and good for 2nd place overall. Not too bad considering his opening 9-hole total of +6. As good as his final round was, Parry’s charge was just not strong enough in the end. Although he had his chance on 18 to tie for low Professional honors, Chun couldn’t keep up to either Bogdan or Parry, closing with a 70 (-2) on the day and good for 3rd place overall.

Bogdan continued to play fine shots from tee-to-green on his closing three holes, and other than coughing up a bogey on his second last hole, played like a Champion on the back nine, closing with a score of 71 on the day and a 54 hole total of -7. Bogdan’s excellent ball striking and great touch around the greens throughout the tournament allowed him to go wire-to-wire en route to his first Vancouver Open Championship win, a huge accomplishment considering the amount of accomplished Professionals in the field (11 past or present Canadian Tour players and one Nationwide Tour player).

Proving himself in front of this many great players should give Bogdan a huge feeling of confidence in his next tournament outing – the U.S. Amateur Championship. Bogdan beat the odds against some of the top Pacific Coast Amateurs at the qualifier in Oregon, shooting -5 and claiming one of only four qualifying spots for this illustrious National Championship.

Congratulations to Lucas on his tremendous accomplishments this week, both in qualifying for the U.S. Amateur (scheduled for Aug.18-24th at the famed Pinehurst #2 Course) and winning the 2008 Vancouver Open Championship. If he keeps playing the way he has the past couple of months (runner-up to Parry at the 2008 Ledgeview Open), you may just see this local boy’s name on the coveted U.S. Amateur trophy in two weeks time!

With just 3 tournaments remaining in the Vancouver Golf Tour schedule, Bryn Parry leads the Professional Order of Merit with $12,111. Winning $2,600 for Low Professional honors at this weekend’s Vancouver Open, Parry surged further ahead of Dan Swanson who holds down 2nd place in the VGT OOM with a total of $9,958. Ledgeview’s Andrew Smeeth finished in a tie for 4th in the tournament, earning $1,150, maintaining his 3rd place standing in the OOM at $7,596.

Second Round in Review:

BOGDAN BOUNCES BACK INTO THE LEAD AFTER ROCKY START

Twenty year old Ledgeview Amateur Lucas Bodgan heads into the final round of the 2008 PERFECT LIES VANCOUVER OPEN with a four shot lead over Canadian Tour Professional Jeremy Paradis. With the rain and wind toughening the course conditions in round two, Bogdan struggled early on in the round, carding a 4-over par 40 on his front nine before battling back nicely on the back nine with a closing 34.

In fact at the turn, it was the 22 year-old Jeremy Paradis who held the tournament lead after 27 holes with a very solid front nine score of 33. Paradis maintained his fine play on the back nine with another birdie on 11, but stumbled with bogeys on 12,14 and a double bogey on 17 to finish at even for the day and -2 for the tournament. Making a solid charge to get back into contention today was Nationwide Tour’s Bryn Parry who carded a 2-under par 70 and a 36 hole total of +1 and only 3 shots off Paradis (Low Professional). In between Paradis and Parry sit another half-dozen Professionals (Dan Swanson, Matt Palsenbarg, Andrew Smeeth, Shingo Akizuki, Iljin Chun and Stephen Connor) who will be chomping at the heels of the youngsters Bogdan and Paradis in Sunday’s final round.

Knowing that the VGT Order of Merit is also up for grabs is also going to make the final round that much more exciting as the top 3 OOM leaders (Parry, Swanson and Smeeth) all sit near the top. At the conclusion of the Vancouver Open and the VGT Summer Pro-am Championship (Aug.28th), the leading OOM to date will be awarded the illustrious prize of a paid entry to PGA TOUR QUALIFYING SCHOOL (approx. $5,000 value).

The 2008 Perfect Lies Vancouver Open is VGT’s first 54 Championship with a cut after 36 holes. The field was cut to the top 70% of the Professional after 36 holes and the top 40% gross and net scores in the amateur side of the tournament. Fifty nine players remain to play in Sunday’s final round which gets underway at 7:00am sharp.

Expect to see some early birdies from our chasers early on to put the heat on the two leaders. The final group in the 2008 Perfect Lies Vancouver Open tee-off at 10:10am. Spectators are welcome to watch. Admission is $5 for the day with all proceeds going to Junior Golf.

First Round in Review

BOGDAN SCORCHES SANDPIPER WITH OPENING ROUND OF 64

Filling his card with 8 birdies and an eagle on day one of the 2008 Perfect Lies Vancouver Open, the young and talented Lucas Bogdan of Ledgeview Golf & Country Club holds a 4 shot lead over Professionals Andrew Smeeth and Don Seol who both carded rounds of 68. It was just a month ago when Bogdan went head-to-head against both Smeeth and Bryn Parry in the final round of the Ledgeview Open, only to have Parry birdie the 18th for a one shot victory. Bogdan obviously seems to be right at home playing with some of BC’s top Professionals which will serve him well as he will be paired up with both Smeeth and Seol in the final group on Saturday – tee-ing off at 10:50am. Nationwide Tour Player and VGT Order of Merit Leader Bryn Parry had a rocky start to his day including an unfortunate 2-stroke penalty on the 4th hole. The ruling seemed to throw Parry for a couple of holes, going four over his next two holes before bouncing back on the back nine with a 3-under par to bring it back to +3 on the day. Both Parry and 2nd Place Order of merit holder Dan Swanson will need to make their move on both Bogdan and Smeeth in round two. Swanson carded an even par 72 for the day.
