Overall Champion Todd Halpen (middle) pictured with VGT Commissioner and Brad Garside of Paine Edmonds Law Firm (R) It seems like the Canadian Tour’s Todd Halpen made the right move to come out to the west coast in preparation of his ’09 Canadian Tour season. In blistering winds up to 60 km/hr at Boundary Bay’s King’s Links by the Sea, Calgary’s Todd Halpen stayed patient, carding two birdies and an eagle for a well-earned round of 71(-1). Halpen’s fine play earned him the 2009 Brad Garside Open Championship and $1,300 for his victory over the other 82 golfers in the field. Halpen plans to play in a few additional VGT Spring events before the Can Tour schedule commences on April 20th in Mexico. Halpen needed an eagle on hole #14 to hold onto a one shot victory over local Kings Links Teaching Professional Dave Bolton who birdied 14 & 15 to shoot even par 72 and a second place cheque of $900. 2008 Champion John Shin and former Champion Tour player Norm Jarvis fell two shots short with scores of 73 (+1).

In the Championship Amateur Division, 18 year old Swan-e-set superstar Justin Shin fired an impressive score of 74 in the extreme winds, claiming victory by 4 shots over his nearest competitors Michael Son of Mayfair Lakes and South African Dean Walters. Some of you may remember Shin from his impressive run with partner Charlie Hughes – who fought their way to the finals the 2008 BC Match Play Championships. Shin and Hughes will pair up again at the March 28, 29th qualifying event.

Amateur Champion Justin Shin pictured with Brad GarsideTitle Sponsor Brad Garside of Paine Edmonds Law Firm was on hand to watch the final groups come in and award the Professional cheques and Amateur prizes to all winners. VGT Commissioner Fraser Mulholland expressed his appreciation of Mr. Garside and Paine Edmond’s support of the Vancouver Golf Tour the last three years: ‘We are very lucky to have such a supporter in Brad Garside and the Paine Edmonds Law Firm’ stated Mulholland. “Brad has been a huge supporter of our Tour’s development since our inception and has really helped us grow the game of golf right here in Vancouver”. “We look forward to continuing our relationship with Brad and the Paine Edmonds Law Firm as we develop in the future”.

Mr. Garside was presented with a plaque for the appreciation of his Platinum Sponsorship and given a chance to say a few words. “I am very happy to be involved with the Vancouver Golf Tour again in 2009 and it’s been my pleasure seeing the growth of the tour and the opportunities VGT is providing for aspiring young talent in our region”. “It is great to see how many great players are developing in our region I truly believe its just a matter of time before a few of them make it onto the PGA Tour”.
