On
a fierce day of links golf that saw
winds blowing 40-60 km/hr, “Dr.” Phil
Jonas held off a field of 76 golfers
to claim his first victory in 2009 on
the Vancouver Golf Tour schedule. Jonas
needed to outlast both Canadian Tour Pro
Matt Daniel and Seymour Creek’s Dave
Zibrik in a sudden death playoff that
lasted 3 holes. It was Jonas’ late
birdie on #17 got him to -2 for the day
and into the 3-way playoff at the
commencement of play. It was also Jonas’
good fortune that both Zibrik and Daniel
missed prime opportunities to close out
the day at -3 on the 18th hole – Zibrik
a 4-footer for birdie and Daniel missing
a five footer for par. Past Nationwide
Tour player Bryn Parry rallied on his
back nine to shoot 33 (-3) and narrowly
miss the playoff by one shot. Jonas’
playoff win was good for $1,000 and
vaults him up to the top of the
CLEVELAND GOLF / SRIXON ORDER OF MERIT
with $1,358.66. Calgary’s Todd Halpen
sits in second on the VGT Order of Merit
with $1,300 after his win at the Brad
Garside Open two weeks ago.

Amateur Notes: It seems as though
Phil Jonas doesn’t just PLAY a mean
game, but he is getting quite a
reputation as one of the top TEACHERS in
our area. Case in point in the
Championship Amateur Division as one of
his young protégé’s David Cao
went on to win the Overall Amateur Title
at the Royalwood Classic with a fine
score of 71 (-1). Cao won Amateur
honours by a margin of 4 shots over
local Royalwood Amateur Chris Kobler and
North Vancouver’s Graham Twiss who shot
rounds of 75 in the blustery conditions.
Keep teaching that well Phil and you
might have to surrender some of those
first place cheques to your students!!!
