Thank-you
for playing a part in the 2007 Vancouver Open Championship
presented by Perfect Lies. Your attendance was much appreciated
and I'm sure all of you had as much fun as I did either playing amongst
or watching some of our greatest golfers in the city compete for the
Vancouver Open Championship trophy. If you stayed around till the end,
you would have witnessed the greatest game of golf played at University
Golf Club since its inception some 80 years ago. With his exceptional
play, VGT Professional Phil Jonas broke the existing course record of 64
with an amazing Sunday round of 63 (-8). With his incredible play, Jonas
not only won the Championship by 5 shots at -11, but with his victory he
also sealed the Vancouver Golf Tour Summer AND overall Order of Merit (OOM)
Title. All-in-all, Jonas took away $2,800 for his first place showing in
the Open, another $500 for the Summer OOM and a paid entry down to PGA
Tour Qualifying School worth $5,000 Cdn.
Also playing some great golf during the tournament were Professionals
Andrew Smeeth (Redwoods), Dan Swanson (Fraserview) and Caine Lacusta
(Redwoods), all of whom shared Runner-up honors and took home $1,330
each for their score of -6 overall for the weekend. Doug Morgan
(Redwoods) and James Harper (McCleery) closed out the top 5 with scores
of -5 for the 36 holes, each winning $825.
In the amateur side of the draw, Justin Hyun and Brandan Price, both
from Vancouver, shared low score of 140 (-2) after the 36 hole event. A
sudden playoff was contested to decide who the 2007 Amateur Champion
was, and after a birdie on hole one, Justin Hyun prevailed the winner.
Hyun won a set of Cleveland CG Red Irons for his win and Price took home
a Titleist 907 D2 Driver. Of the 10 juniors invited into the field, Ted
Cho of Langley came out with the low two-day score of 142 (E) and also
went home with a Titleist 907 Driver. The overall Low Net winner of the
Open went to Daryl Archibald of Surrey with a two-day net total of 138
(-4) who also took home a set of Cleveland CG Irons.
With this being the final event on the 2007 Vancouver Golf Tour
schedule, Jonas brought his 2007 VGT earnings to $11,830 and OOM bonus
prize winnings to over $5,500 for the year. An impressive feat that was
just too hard to keep up with these past three months. Jonas' closest
followers down the stretch in the Order of Merit Race were 2nd Place
finisher Andrew Smeeth ($7,925) and 3rd place finisher Dan Swanson
($7,041).
Our continued thanks must go out to our Title Sponsor MarketPlace IGA
for allowing us to make this Inaugural Vancouver Golf Tour season such a
huge success! Perfect Lies played a great role in their Presenting
Sponsorship of the 2007 Vancouver Open this year allowing us to make the
prize table so great for the amateur contestants.
Thanks to all of our supporting and hole sponsors of the event as well
as the committee members and volunteers who played a huge role in
staging this event (listed in our tournament brochure attached). To the
University Golf Club - What a pleasure hosting our closing event at your
facility. Not only was your golf course set-up one of Championship form,
but so too was the reception from all of your staff - Pro-shop, guest
services and banquet/restaurant. From all the positive feedback from the
contestants, the overall experience was one they will not forget - from
the exeptional dinner on Saturday night to the execution and
co-ordination from your staff throughout the weekend.
In closing, I would like to say one last thank-you to all of the
players, sponsors, volunteers, committee members and golf courses who
have supported the tour since its inception. We are embarking on a
developmental task that is a challenging one to say the least. It is
with all of your support that we can say 2007 has been a huge success in
so many ways. I am anticipating some VERY exciting developments in the
fall and will continue to keep all of you on the front page as we
prepare for a banner 2008 VGT season.
